Eastlake Key Club President Wins Lieutenant Governor Spot

Saturday, January 16, 2010

Over his 2008 winter break from school, Matt Matula fantasized about joining a high school club that concentrated its efforts on community service. Unable to find a club that truly fit his needs, his mother suggested he join Key Club, one of the “oldest and largest service programs for high school students.” The problem was that there was not a Key Club at Eastlake High School. His mother then suggested that he start one at Eastlake. Several months later, Matt’s dream of an Eastlake Key Club was fully realized. After coming up with a business plan that illustrated the steps needed, he solicited help from the local Sammamish Kiwanis branch members, Dawn Sanders and Nicky Beedle.  Matt was able to work with Eastlake school officials Chris Bede and Liz Sirjani to develop an Eastlake Key Club for the 2009-2010 school year. Forty members strong, the Eastlake Key Club with Advisor Krista Bjorge has partnered with the Sammamish Kiwanis on community service activities such as the Kiwanis Ski and Sport Swap, Breakfast with Santa, Eastside Baby Corner Bell-Ringing and Road Clean Up. Eastlake Key Club is in the Pacific Northwest Division 27 which also includes Bothell High School, Inglemoor High School, International Community School, Lake Washington High School and Redmond High School. With the experience of founding a local Key Club under his belt, Matt Matula felt he could offer a strong skill set to pursue the Lieutenant Governor position which acts as a liaison between the clubs and the district. On January 16, 2010, Matt competed with several other Key Clubbers from PNW Division 27 for the coveted slot. Matt was voted in by the delegates as the new Lieutenant Governor. He and Eastlake Key Club Officers, Patrick Leake and Ethan Chan will be attending a conference in March, after which Matt will take over duties from outgoing Lieutenant Governor Chris Gao.
